In a recent article, Yahoo Sports senior NFL reporter Jori Epstein discussed the Buffalo Bills’ decision to trade star receiver Stefon Diggs and why it made sense for Houston. The trade was driven by both teams’ push to contend as soon as possible.
Epstein explained that the Bills are not in full rebuild mode, as they believe their window for success with quarterback Josh Allen is always open. While Diggs is a clear wide receiver one and can improve any offense in a vacuum, the Bills saw an opportunity to reset a bit in 2024 in order to maximize the Allen window for the next 5 to 10 seasons.
On the other hand, the Houston Texans have the advantage of having a talented quarterback on a rookie contract, allowing them to invest in a receiver like Diggs without breaking the bank. If the Texans can capitalize on their talent and win games, executives are optimistic that Diggs will be able to contribute effectively. While there may be questions about distributing targets among the receivers, having too many talented options is a good problem to have for Houston.
Both teams had strategic reasons for making the trade, with Buffalo focusing on maximizing their current window of opportunity and Houston leveraging their talented quarterback situation. It will be interesting to see how both teams execute their plans in the upcoming seasons.
