Bridging the Gap: VCU’s New Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science Offers Interdisciplinary Study and Industry-Relevant Skills

2 min read

The Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering is launching a new Bachelor of Arts degree in computer science for the 2024-25 school year. This program is different from the college’s Bachelor of Science degree and aims to bridge the gap by allowing students to combine computer science education with other specialized fields of study.

VCU currently offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degree in computer science for students looking for specialized study in the field. However, a proposal has been made to offer an interdisciplinary approach to computer science that encourages collaboration across various industries through a new Bachelor of Arts program. This responds to the increasing demand for IT expertise as technology continues to evolve and most information technology jobs are now found in industries outside of technology.

The B.A. program will provide students with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience needed for client computing needs assessment, system design, coding, testing, and documentation generation. Graduates will be equipped for roles such as computer programmers, support specialists, systems analysts, developers, quality assurance analysts, testers, web developers, and digital designers.

As the technological landscape changes and VCU recognizes the value of interdisciplinary study and the importance of computing knowledge in all industries, this new degree program allows students from any major to earn a degree in computer science while gaining proficiency in other areas that complement their studies.
