During Men’s Health Month, Shasta County health officials are focusing on addressing men’s mental health needs. The Captain Awesome campaign was started by local men to provide tips and tools for mental wellness. This initiative was developed in response to high suicide rates in the area, particularly among men. Despite making up only 49% of the population in Shasta County, men account for around 80% of all suicide deaths.
The Captain Awesome campaign is sponsored by the county and community partners and includes men from various local groups such as tribal communities, Shasta County HHSA, and the Shasta County Probation Department. The goal of these initiatives is to reduce the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. By encouraging open discussions and promoting help-seeking behaviors, the campaign hopes to make it easier for men to reach out for support. Sydney Stinger, a Community Education Specialist, highlighted the importance of talking about mental health and emphasized that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
