Breaking Diplomatic Relations: Mexico Takes Action to Ensure Safety of Diplomats Following Assault on Embassy in Ecuador

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena, reported that diplomatic personnel who were in Ecuador have returned to Mexico through a commercial flight supported by friendly embassies. Bárcena emphasized that Mexico will always ensure the safety and respect the rights of its diplomatic staff. This decision was made following instructions from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in response to the breaking of diplomatic relations with Ecuador after the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito to capture the former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.

President López Obrador expressed gratitude for the messages of solidarity received from leaders, organizations, and countries in response to what he called a “painful matter.” Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, called for dialogue and announced plans to convene a meeting of the organization’s Permanent Council to address tensions between Mexico and Ecuador.

The president of the Mexican Senate, Ana Lilia Rivera, stressed the importance of Ecuadorian authorities upholding their responsibility to safeguard the Mexican embassy, its assets, and archives in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Rivera urged for dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes to overcome the diplomatic crisis.
