Breaking Barriers: EU and U.S. Officials Unite to Boost Collaboration in Emerging Technologies

In Brussels and Leuven this week, EU and U.S. officials met for the EU-U.S. Trade and Technology Council to discuss joint actions related to emerging technologies such as AI, 6G standards, semiconductors, and quantum technologies. The discussions were led by Alexandre Roure, Head of Policy and Deputy Head of Office at CCIA Europe, who expressed enthusiasm for the positive steps being taken to boost trade, economic security, and digital collaboration between the two regions.

Roure also emphasized the importance of aligning on responsible AI, which he noted is crucial for strengthening the shared vision and delivering tangible results in deploying trusted emerging technologies globally. He expressed anticipation for closer transatlantic engagement in the future and highlighted the TTC’s ongoing role in facilitating this collaboration.

Jonathan McHale, CCIA Vice President for Digital Trade praised the progress made in aligning standards for 6G and cooperation on AI during the meetings. He noted that finding joint solutions to divergent approaches will be key to ensuring the durability of the TTC’s work. McHale emphasized that these discussions are essential for shaping a thriving digital economy in both Europe and North America.

CCIA Europe is an international not-for-profit trade association representing various communications and technology firms based in Brussels since 2009. They have been actively contributing to EU policy making with a goal of advocating for a thriving digital economy in Europe through understanding of industry expertise shared with policy makers to inform their decisions.

Overall, these discussions represent an important step towards greater cooperation between two major global powers in shaping a responsible use of emerging technologies while promoting economic growth through trade agreements that benefit both regions.
