Blast Off into Space: Science Museum Oklahoma Bids Farewell to Its Iconic Planetarium with Dazzling Laser Light Shows

2 min read

Science Museum Oklahoma is bidding farewell to its iconic planetarium with a summer filled with dazzling shows featuring bright lasers, fog, and music from legendary acts such as The Grateful Dead, Elton John, Queen, and The Beatles. The planetarium has been open since 1978, but will be demolished sometime in the fall to make way for new exhibits at 2020 Remington Pl.

The light shows are a farewell tribute to the current planetarium and tickets are $22.50, with all proceeds going towards supporting the new planetarium. The shows take place at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through June 15, with concessions available for attendees.

Planetarium director Waylon Troyer explained that the light shows use a hazer to create a fog in the air, allowing the light particles from the lasers to scatter and create stunning effects. The shows demonstrate the dual nature of light as both particles and waves, creating an engaging and educational experience for audiences.

In addition to the light shows, Science Museum Oklahoma has a variety of activities and events happening throughout the summer. These include The Nature of Discovery event on June 5, which explores the science of pollinators and provides tips on creating bug hotels for yards. There are also daily tinkering activities and science live demonstrations, as well as weekly Storytime Science sessions for children aged 2-6 held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.
