Public places have been the scene of shootings in the region, from a Waffle House to an apartment complex. These traumatic events can have a lasting impact on individuals, leading to nightmares, difficulty eating or sleeping and other related issues. It is crucial to seek help if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.
We spoke with Christina Ferrell, a counselor and program manager at Horizon Behavioral Health, who shared insights on managing traumatic experiences. Horizon offers therapy for trauma where individuals can work on creating safety in their minds and processing what they have been through. Each person reacts differently to traumatic events based on their own skills, tools and past experiences.
Ferrell emphasized the importance of seeking help if needed. Horizon Behavioral Health has an after-hours line for immediate assistance which can be reached at (434) 522-8191. Additionally, the agency provides gun locks to the public in an effort to keep firearms out of the wrong hands.
If you are struggling with the aftermath of a traumatic event, do not hesitate to seek help from professionals. Horizon Behavioral Health is there to support individuals in managing the emotional impact of such events. Remember that it is okay to ask for help and that there are resources available to assist you in coping with traumatic experiences.
