Beachgoers in Los Angeles County Warned of High Bacteria Levels: Five Affected Locations Advised to Avoid Swimming and Surfing

1 min read

Memorial Day weekend beachgoers in Los Angeles County should be cautious as the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued a warning due to high levels of bacteria in the ocean. The department is advising against activities such as swimming, surfing, and playing in the water at five beaches in the area.

The affected locations include Santa Monica Canyon Creek at Will Rogers State Beach, Mother Beach in Marina Del Rey, Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach, Santa Monica Pier, and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. Recent testing showed that bacterial levels exceeded health standards at these areas.

However, there is some good news as the department has lifted earlier warnings for two area beaches. Recent samples showed that the water quality levels at the Temescal Canyon storm drain at Will Rogers State Beach and the Pico-Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica State Beach near Santa Monica South Tower 20 are now within state standards.

For up-to-date information on beach conditions, individuals can call the county’s beach closure hotline at 1-800-525-5662, which is available 24 hours a day. Additionally, a map of impacted locations and more information can be found on the county’s website.
