The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced new airfield surveillance systems to improve the safety of air travelers. The technology will be operational at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport starting from June 30th, making it one of only four airports in the US to utilize these systems.
The new system will provide air traffic controllers with a clearer picture of the airport’s surface traffic, allowing them to reduce the risk of runway incidents. Aircraft and ADS-B equipped vehicles will be depicted as icons on an airport map that shows runways, taxiways, hold ramps, and other areas.
With the busy summer travel season approaching, the FAA is taking multiple layers of safety measures to ensure the well-being of passengers. The new airfield surveillance system is seen as another crucial layer of protection for travelers.
In May 2024, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport experienced its busiest month ever in terms of passenger traffic, with almost 2.07 million passengers passing through the airport. This marks a significant milestone as only five other months have seen more than 2 million passengers at the airport.
