Gudaf Tsegay, a world 5000m record holder, recently shared her thoughts with World Athletics Inside Track during an interval session with her training group. With high expectations for the Olympic year ahead, Tsegay feels a great sense of responsibility to not only represent her country and secure an elusive Olympic gold medal but also to inspire her talented young training partners.
As one of the most accomplished runners in her group and with young athletes looking up to her, Tsegay understands the importance of winning over her people. Her husband coaches the group, adding another layer of responsibility for Tsegay as she strives to achieve success on the global stage.
Tsegay explained that representing Ethiopia is a great honor for her, as she knows that it is expected of her to bring home gold medals. She sees herself as fulfilling a dream when she competes at the Olympics and hopes that she can do so while inspiring others along the way. With two world championship titles under her belt already, Tsegay’s focus is now on achieving Olympic gold in 2023.
