On April 26th, Klager Elementary School held a captivating event called Around the World with Math and Science Night. The dedicated team of volunteers from both Klager and high schools brought together families to immerse themselves in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) learning in the cafeteria. Children were able to explore various aspects of math and science from around the world.
One station allowed children to discover the science behind growing food in the Arctic. They also learned about the origins of popcorn in Peru and how sorbet was invented in China. Through technology demonstrations by Klager K-12 robotics teams, children were able to engage with robotics and practice their engineering skills with K’Nex sets from the United States. An art show preview delighted families, who were also given an opportunity to participate in a make-and-take activity to create notebooks, which were invented in Australia.
A math challenge presented by high school students took the form of Mancala, a game created in Africa. Throughout the event, Title 1 representatives shared information on reading Michigan-based books and products while MI Future Funds provided guidance on college planning and saving. Children voted for their favorite station at the end of the night, with Robotics Teams winning first place.
Families of all ages enjoyed this interactive and engaging event that allowed them to explore different facets of math and science from around the world.
