On Friday, the university confirmed the death of football player Jack Murphy, an Appalachian State offensive lineman. The news was announced on social media by Head Coach Shawn Clark and the university also released a statement expressing condolences. The cause of death has not been announced, but foul play is not suspected.
Jack Murphy was a redshirt junior who transferred from Marshall and played his first season with Appalachian State in 2023. He started all 14 games at offensive tackle and earned All-Sun Belt third team honors for his performance. Originally from Fairfax, Virginia, Murphy was a beloved member of the Mountaineer community.
The university is respecting the family’s wishes and providing support and assistance as needed during this tragic time. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jack Murphy,” Clark wrote on social media. “He was a beloved Mountaineer. Please keep his loved ones and our App State family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
