Alpaca-Powered Mental Wellness: Families Gather for Community Event in Greater Scranton Area

1 min read

On the weekend, families in the Greater Scranton Area gathered at the YMCA in Dunmore for a free community event called “Thriving Together”. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and celebrate the mental well-being initiative called “Mental health is wealth” by the organization.

Dozens of families enjoyed a variety of family-friendly activities such as a giant dart board, bounce houses, and a meet and greet with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Mascot Tux. However, what seemed to have a calming effect on everyone was the presence of an alpaca petting zoo at the event.

According to Haley Schaffer, an alpaca enthusiast, these animals serve as emotional support animals and are fluffy, friendly, and a source of comfort similar to a cuddle buddy or a dog at home. While having an alpaca as a pet may not be practical, the opportunity to interact with them at events like this one can be soothing and enjoyable for attendees.

The program plans to continue hosting events that engage the community in various activities and practices that promote mental and emotional well-being. Events like these provide an opportunity for families and individuals to come together, have fun, and prioritize their mental health.
