Alarming Mental Health Issues Facing Arizona Youth: What Policymakers Need to Do

Arizona youth aged 12 to 17 are facing a range of mental health issues, according to a report titled “The State of Adolescent Health in Arizona.” Compiled by the Arizona Alliance for Adolescent Health, the report revealed that approximately one in six Arizona adolescents experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, which is the ninth-highest rate in the country. Despite this, many young people in Arizona are not receiving the necessary treatment.

According to the report, only 30% of adolescents in crisis received treatment in the state last year. Matt Jewett, director of health policy at the Children’s Action Alliance, expressed his concern over this issue. He noted that teenagers in Arizona are less likely to have access to basic healthcare services compared to younger children due to their lower rates of health insurance and regular well visits.

Jewett emphasized that addressing adolescent health issues is crucial for their future well-being. He also highlighted that recent expansion of Arizona’s Medicaid program will make thousands more kids eligible for health coverage this year. The findings of this report shed light on the urgent need for improvements in access to mental health services for teenagers in Arizona.

The report also highlighted other mental health concerns among young people, including anxiety disorders and substance abuse. These issues can have long-lasting impacts on an individual’s mental and physical health if left untreated.

Overall, it is clear that there is a significant need for better access to mental health services and support for adolescents in Arizona. This includes not just treatment when needed but also preventative measures such as education and resources for parents and caregivers.

It is important for policymakers and healthcare providers alike to take action on these issues to ensure that all young people have access to the care they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives. With proper support, we can help address these challenges and create a better future for our youth.
