AfD Leaves ID Party Alliance in Stunning Move: What It Means for Germany and Europe

In a stunning announcement made at the party conference in Essen, the German far-right party AfD has decided to leave the European party alliance ID. This decision was made following the authority of the federal executive board, which was granted by a two-thirds majority vote by the delegates.

The ID, short for Identity and Democracy, is a coalition of right-wing populist and nationalist parties. The AfD had only joined the ID party alliance last year, but had previously been a part of the ID faction in the European Parliament. However, controversial statements made by AfD top candidate Maximilian Krah about the National Socialist SS resulted in the exclusion of the AfD group from the parliamentary group shortly before the European elections.

Despite efforts to reconcile with Krah after his exclusion from parliamentary group membership, tensions between Krah and other members of his faction persisted. Ultimately, these differences proved too great for Krah to remain a member of ID, leading to his resignation from parliament earlier this year.

With its decision to leave ID, AfD is once again standing on its own as a far-right political force in Germany and Europe. It remains to be seen how this move will impact both AfD’s domestic and international standing, as well as how it will affect future alliances within Europe.
