A Kentucky Guard Returns Home: D.J. Wagner Commits to Arkansas

D.J. Wagner, a highly regarded 5-star prospect and former Kentucky guard, has committed to Arkansas over the weekend. This marks the eighth addition to the team’s roster since Arkansas Coach John Calipari took over the program on April 10.

When Calipari and his staff first arrived, the team had no scholarship players, but they now boast the top transfer class in the nation. Prior to Wagner’s commitment, Arkansas’ transfer class was already ranked No. 1 nationally by 247Sports. What’s interesting is that six of the team’s commits have ties to Kentucky.

Wagner visited both Fayetteville and Southern Cal before making his decision, but ultimately chose to head southwest for Hog Hill. During his freshman season at Kentucky, Wagner started 28 of 29 games and put up impressive numbers, averaging 9.9 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game. He was honored with a selection to the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2023-24 and was named the SEC freshman of the week three times. Wagner had standout performances against Arkansas during that season, scoring a career-high 28 points in a win over Marshall and also scoring an impressive 27 points in two victories against the Razorbacks.

Wagner’s family has a strong basketball background – his father DaJuan played for Calipari at Memphis and his grandfather Milt was a star at Louisville – which likely contributed to his decision to join their coach once again.
